Location Date/Time Conditions
Upper Trestles 04/27/02
7:30 am - 10:00 am
2 - 3' some 4+ We've had some of the worst onshore winds this month and yesterday was the topper with the wind blowing about 20 knots after about 8:30 am and continuing all day past sunset. Anyhow, a residual lump was breaking up what would have been an extremely clean southern hemi swell. So, after failing miserably for a week to score something half way decent I just said fuck it and drove up to Trestles figuring the "swell" was going to peak. Not a lot of swell or oomph to it, with Uppers kind of just rolling and then quickly heaving close out sections across the point. A few lining up but patience was key as I sat wide and caught a few nice lines and even got a real solid cover up. Not great Trestles but at least it was decent enough to surf.
Scripps 04/27/02
4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
2 - 3'+ Super windy again today as another little front pushed through. Looked all over and the only place with half way ridable surf was Scripps. Wind swell so pretty weak, but a few sets had some size. Form was OK when I first paddled out because the tide was still pretty low but once the tide moved in it became total wind blown mush. Everybody then (let me say one of the biggest and stupidest packs I can remember in recent history) started to surf these little reforms way inside pounding into 6 inches of water. Caught a little right tube in here which was the highlight of an otherwise a completely terrible session.
Fairgrounds 04/20/02
7:00 am - 8:30 am
1 - 3' Drove up to Rincon thinking there might be enough wind swell to get it moving. Flat. Head down to Fairgrounds and manage to nab a parking spot at the Point lot (a minor miracle on a Saturday). The point at Fairgrounds barely working on the super junky wind swell. Better with more tide as the tide dropped out but managed early on to get a few rippable little waves. Tide dropped out more as did the swell and finally got a waist high wave with a little bit of face on it in. Better than a sharp stick in the eye I guess.
Newbreak 04/19/02
7:00 am - 9:00 am
2 - 3'+ More steep wind swell today with the buoys showing even more size. More mixed up than yesterday from really strong winds yesterday afternoon. Nubes pretty much the only spot breaking around this section of the cliffs. Some fun walling waves. Not real powerful but enough oomph for plenty of good whacks and roundies. A few tubes to be had if you picked right. Crowd real light and mellow. First full session I haven't had any pain at all. Finally healed! Good session.
La Jolla Shores 04/18/02
9:30 am - 11:00 am
1 - 3' Very steep wind swell once again hitting the coast with a little more consistency and longer period. Still pretty weak but the Shores was cleaning it up creating some workable lefts and rights. Wind was starting to kick up out of the south southwest and looked like it was better with the no wind when I pulled up. Can't win them all but there were still some surfable rights between the bathroom and the tower.
Swami's 04/16/02
6:30 am - 8:00 am
1 - 3' Very steep wind swell trickling its way into North County today. Very close interval and junky with a direction around 315º. Swell was more than likely hitting better south of Del Mar but decided to chill at Swami's instead. Very low tide at 6:00 helping things out a bit with a few whackable sections off the peak but overall it was pretty dribbly. Caught a nice lined up chest high one that opened up for a nice roundy and solid whack and decided to go in on it.
Swami's 04/13/02
12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
1 - 3' Debated and debated while looking at it from the parking lot at Swami's. Overcast had finally burnt off but northwest wind was starting to kick up because of it. Swell small out of the south again but three foot sets every five to ten minutes had a light crowd jockeying on the peak. Decided to charge it and was glad I did because even though it was small there were some zippy little waves to be had if you were patient. Nothing spectactular but deep corner was throwing a nice little wall for a couple of hitties.
OB Pier 04/12/02
12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
1 - 3' Small and clean southwest pulse running. Pretty small and lackluster everywhere except for this nice wedging right peak into the pier at OB. Pesky south wind that has been plaguing the coast for days was not a factor, thankfully, because of the way the cliff and the pier block these light south winds. Every once in awhile this bar forms right next to the pier and it can be pretty racey and even throw a tube or two. Today it was just small wedges that were a bit soft but zippy and whackable. Not bad.
Newbreak 04/10/02
8:00 am - 10:00 am
1 - 2' Super small everywhere. Was determined to surf however and knew that there was a very small pulse of southwest swell running. Checked OB, which looked OK but was closed due to a sewage spill. Figured that with the highish tide way inside Newbreak might be working with the little south pulse. Two guys out surfing Sub so figured there had to something. Way inside had a tiny wave that looked hittable so got on it. Two guys tried to heckle me as I walked down the trail probably thinking I was a total kook for paddling out in flat conditions. Every 10 minutes or so a five wave set was pushing through on the deep inside corner, creating a two whack wave. Couldn't see it from the cliff unless you were either way up at the college or working in the circular Navy building but I got some fun waves all to myself on the tide push. Tide turned around and it stopped pushing over the reef so went in. Very peaceful and a joy to surf all by myself with no hassles or hurry ups.
Swami's 04/04/02
7:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 3' Super clean small south swell. Very inconsistent also. Was feeling pretty good paddling around but there is definately some lingering soreness, so feeling about 75%. Felt I was surfing pretty good for only having surfed once in 3 ½ weeks. Tide was dropping fast so conditions were better when I first paddled out when the tide was a bit more full. Caught a couple of nice peaks on the outside and few further in on the deep corner. Incosnsistency was a killer though. Too many people and not enough waves. Finally in my frustration moved to the way inside corner where there was some real inconsistent razor sharp 2 foot lines peeling. Caught a couple of these and should have went in. Unfortunately stayed out and was completely stymied by the lack of swell and a ridiculous crowd forming. Got a dribbler in. So, so session but definately good to get back in the water.
