Location Date/Time Conditions
Chalcedony St. 04/30/04
6:30 am - 9:00 am
2 - 3' some + South swell lingering but super inconsistent. I sat at Bird willing it to break for about 15 minutes since the tide was oh so right at about 4'. It almost did. A slight west wind swell cross in the water so headed down to the beach breaks. Tide peaking a and few lined up lefts and the odd right coming through but super fast. Tide turned and made it even more fast and then becoming closed out and dredgy. Mostly end section hits or race the wave until it died. Probably should of surfed Swami's on the high. Mediocre.

2 - 4' South winds were howling all through the night and finally backed down around 8:00 a.m. Decided to go down to the Cliffs seeing that the tide was dropping and the sun was finally out. Good call. Wind barely puffing out of he south down on the beach while the lower tide was starting to clean up the wind swell muck on top of the lingering southern hemi. Some good warbly but lined up waves with the odd tube section over the inside boil. Pretty rippable. Funny, me and the same guy who I had the session with the other day was the only one out. He went in and a couple guys joined in but crowd almost non-existent. This is why I love this place this time of year - still pulls down the waves but everybody doesn't give it a look. Fun.
Swami's 04/28/04
6:00 am - 9:00 am
3 - 6' some + South swell peaked last night but still some solid but inconsistent sets. Tide was coming off a 4 footer at 4:30 a.m. so starting to suck out. South wind light and variable but looking to rear it's ugly head. A few sectiony slopes through the inside. Nothing all that great so headed out to the peak were the inside way deep had some good lined up sections. Some bombs plowing through and closing out. Wind started to really pick up and just blowing it to bits. Peak was still handling it a bit and everybody headed in leaving me and just a few guys to pick the choicer sets that would line up before closing out by mid peak. Caught a couple pretty good ones but the wind really started to tear it up and struggled to get a good one in. Fun but nothing epic.
Bird Rock 04/27/04
5:30 am - 7:00 am
3 - 6' some 8'+ South swell really coming on but very strong north winds from the night before had the waves hacked up, although the surface was glassy. Still really not enough tide for classic Bird but there were some reforms charging into Ziggy's although really not proper Ziggy's wither with the low tide and wind swell slop. Lots of roundies and if you got one from deep enough a few good sections to crack. Crowd not too bad at first mainly because access from the stairs is shut down from the City repairing the area at the foot of Bird Rock Ave. Had to paddle out from Hennemans which is about a five - ten minute paddle. Some bomb sets unloading way outside mushing out and if properly milked good for an inside run. OK but not as good for the amount of swell.

6:30 am - 10:00 am
3 - 5'+ South swell still had a lot of west in it, but these morning low tides not helping things out. Checked Bird and just not enough water for the direction, but some size. Decided on a knowledgeable whim to check the Cliffs. Two guys out a Nubes and some nice looking sets plowing through. Head down and paddle out to three guys who didn't have the welcome wagon out. One I knew, but he pretended like he didn't, the fucking prick. All with questionable skills, which I love about these old daddy-o's who think they own this place. Got the guided tour by some fuck on a log. Anyhow, after showing them a thing or two they got out and I had it to myself with one new arrival. Swell was really starting to come on now. A bit crossed but the dropping tide throwing some bowls and lot of carvable face to work with. We basically gorged ourselves on waves while we had it to ourselves. Some nice bomber sets every ten minutes or so hitting the reef and throwing. Wind shifting around everywhere with the fog swirling but finally a glass off as the temps started rising. A few people join us. Even with the crowd staring to build was just pulling down some sickies. Haven't been tubed this many times in ages. Super fun.

7:00 am - 10:00 am
2 - 5'+ Well the beginning of the south swell run is here. Wish the tides were more beneficial for the south swell spots around here. Tide way to low for Swami's on a south but of course it was too tempting to pass up seeing no one could see anything because of the blanket fog. Slow and sectiony but definitely size. Luckily the tide turned around 8:00 and magically the peak turned on with some really nice shoulder to head high lines going into mid peak. Pretty bowly also. I managed to score two back to back cover ups. Was getting markedly better and of course the fog lifted and everybody could see that it was getting decent so the crowd went from about 10 to 30 in minutes. By then I had my fill and got a good long ripper through the inside. Fun.
Swami's 04/23/04
6:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 3'+ Left over wind swell and a tad of southern hemi running. Beautiful glassy conditions with clear skies. What a difference from yesterday. On the weak side but the low tide had it throwing some tubes and the corner once and awhile was linking up some nice walls. Actually got a nice little tube on the inside. Had it pretty much to myself for about an hour and then some of the girls joined me. They all went in and I had it to myself again for about a half hour until the hoards arrived. Swell was really dying by now and was struggling to get a good one in. Finally nabbed a little set on the corner. Fun.
Swami's 04/22/04
7:00 am - 9:00 am
3 - 5' Pretty solid out of the west with some wind swell mixed in. Of course, completely blown to bits by the south winds. Went out anyhow seeing a few pieces and parts to dissect. Caught a couple good ones but overall pretty much trash. Too bad because the swell had some juice. Poor.
Scripps 04/21/04
7:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 3' More pukey little wind swell at about 4-6 second intervals. Very small southern hemi in the mix too. South winds pretty much just trashing everywhere except for the La Jolla beachies. Although nothing close to being good, Scripps was at least ridable with the odd peak popping up here and there for a couple quick cracks and close out bashes. OK.
Terramar 04/17/04
7:00 am - 9:00 am
2 - 4'+ South swell turned really south overnight and not many places picking it up. Lots of short interval puke in the water also. Contemplated driving to Trestles but thought better of it with the weekend crowd. Cruised up the coast and saw that Terramar was picking up the swell pretty well. A little on the slow side but the right wave selection gave you a nice fat lined up wall to gets some roundies and a few lips on. Was pretty fun for awhile until the tide really started filling in and effectively shutting it down in about a time frame of 20 minutes. OK.
Chalcedony St. 04/16/04
7:30 am - 9:30 am
2 - 3'+ All my driving around finally paid off. Small southern hemi running but not really hitting San Diego well at all. Some decent sized wind swell running also. Started at Bird Rock, which was weak. Moved on to OB Jetty, which had some size but zero shape, and then ended up at the Cliffs, which had swell but was swamped by the tide. So, back to Bird I go but I decide to check the north side of the pier because it likes these crosses. No one out between Diamond and Law and silky peaks up and down the beach. Was ripping up a fun right at first which disappeared after peak high but then the lefts started firing up from Chalcedony to Law. Must of been a good party last night somewhere because no one joined me until about 9:00 am. Tide started pulling out fast and beginning to close it out a bit. Really fun while it lasted.
Del Mar 12th St. 04/15/04
6:30 am - 8:30 am
1 - 3'+ Lots of short period wind swell in the water and high tide not looking to good anywhere. Swami's weak as was Cardiff and Seaside. Pull up to Del Mar and the hight tide has some good reforms up and down the beach between 11th and 13th streets. Nothing spectacular but a few punchy little left and right gems were to be had. Caught a couple rights that lined up all the way to the beach. Pretty much had it all to myself while all the long boards waited outside for who knows what. OK.
Swami's 04/14/04
6:30 am - 8:30 am
1 - 3' Small mix of tiny south swell and some west wind swell. A few high tide double ups on the inside good for some roundies and the odd lip. Nothing spectacular.
Newbreak 04/12/04
8:30 am - 11:00 am
1 - 2' some+ Pretty tiny but conditions were beautiful - sheet glass and zero wind with the sun starting to peak out. Just two long boards on Nubes when I walked down and then they went in after awhile. Had some fun little rippers all to myself. Super clean little waves throwing little bowls. Knew it couldn't last as finally a couple guys came and joined me but by then the tide was a bit too low and shutting it down. Fun.
Swami's 04/11/04
6:30 am - 7:30 am
1 - 3' Swell barely hanging on. Was in LA on Saturday so missed the last bits of the swell. Super clean but also very inconsistent. A few worthy waves pushing through for the patient. Lots of long boarding idiots out. OK.
Swami's 04/09/04
7:00 am - 10:30 am
3 - 5' Swell finally filled in over night. Not super clean with a kind of wobble to it but for this time of year I'll take it. Low tide making it sectiony and mushy so waited to go out until the tide turned around. Got much better as the tide pushed with the corner throwing some legitimate barrels and some nice crackable walls. A few mid peak sections sneaking all the way through also. Crowd was thick again with all the kids out in full force who would normally be in school. Managed to get a lot of waves nonetheless just through sheer out positioning. Really fun.
Swami's 04/08/04
8:30 am - 10:30 am
1 - 2' New north swell barely even showing. A few week waist high pulses out of the south creating a few fun rippables but nothing too exciting happening unlike the prediction which was calling for it to be pretty solid by noon. Spring break in full effect also with millions of kids on long boards. Yeah.
Newbreak 04/07/04
6:30 am - 8:30 am
1 - 3' Small mixture of left over southern hemi and west wind swell creating some fun double ups on the minus low tide. A nice window appeared around 7:00 when the tide turned and started to push were it was pretty carvable and a few bowls were popping. Tide rushed in quick and shut it down fast but fun nonetheless.
Swami's 04/05/04
6:00 am - 8:00 am
1 - 3' Southern hemi that came up yesterday was already losing steam big time. A few inconsistent sets on the low tide. The tide was rushing in softening up what little was on offer. Started to get better with the push but crowd was getting thick. Mediocre at best.
Swami's 04/02/04
6:00 am - 8:00 am
1 - 3'+ Yesterday just a memory as the size really dropped over night. Still a little juice on offer with some good double ups on the inside during peak high tide. These good for some roundies and the occasional lip. Crowd really light. Fun but nothing great.
Swami's 04/01/04
5:30 am - 9:00 am
3 - 4' some 5'+ A lot more swell in the water today than we have had in awhile. A mid period west dishing up most of the size while some southern hemi popping up some decent sized cross ups. Mid peak was pretty damn rippable for about three hours after the tide turned. Tide finally got a bit too low and slowed it down. Caught lots of waves making it really fun.
