Location Date/Time Conditions
Scripp's 08/31/05
6:00 am - 7:00 am
2 - 3'+ Wind swell on the decline but form seemed a bit more peaky. Seemed that the waves had the problem of either being close out thumpers or complete mush. One of those days. A few mushy rights between the pier and the stairs were my consolation. Fair at best.
Scripp's 08/30/05
6:00 am - 8:00 am
2 - 4'+ Wind swell peaking. A little ragged on the medium tide rising but I guess we will take what we can get as this shittiest of summers draws to a close. Tide started filling in and smoothing things out. A few rights but the lefts towards the pier showing better line. Overall, however, couldn't help but notice the lack of power even in the bigger waves. Sun actually burst out and as the tide started peaking some rights started breaking near the pier. Overall not too bad but definatley nothing epic.
Swami's 08/29/05
6:00 am - 7:30 am
1 - 3' Some southern hemi generally bypassing most of San Diego and a new does of wind swell in the water. Looked promising early morning as the buoys were actually showing some juice. Was not to happen. short period slop mucking up a very inconsistent southern hemi. Wind swell was trying to do something but it was just really weak and mushy to the point of almost being unsurfable. There were a few weak walls to work with here and there but overall not too good. Probably a better beach break day.
Black's 08/24/05
6:00 am - 7:00 am
1 - 2' maybe a + All swells have faded to jut a blip. Of course it's super clean because it's near flat. Sat way up in north peak looking for the occasional right. Caught maybe one memorable wave, all the others were small schlappers. Poor.
Black's 08/23/05
6:00 am - 8:00 am
1 - 3'+ Northwest wind swell on the way out while there was some lingering southern hemi pulses. Pretty textured early with a stiff south wind. Lots of closeouts but as the tide started to fill in and the wind finally laid down it started to improve drastically. Crowd a bit out of control but I hit up deep north peak and scored some good rights and lefts and even scored a full on tube. Fun.
Black's 08/22/05
6:00 am - 7:30 am
2 - 4'+ After a weekend of flatness the swell had jumped over night from a good little dose of northwest wind swell. Blacks sucking it up well and with a little bit of southern hemi running, there were some sweet left peaks up around middle and north peak. Crowd was nice and light and the wind was barely puffing out of the north. Plenty of juicy lefts to go around. Really fun.
Black's 08/19/05
6:00 am - 7:30 am
1 - 4'+ South swell on the way out the door. Still some decent lefts busting off north peak at dawn. No wind to a light offshore and a low tide rising. Was getting less consistent as the morning wore on and I was sitting between middle and north peak not catching a thing but noticed some unridden waves way deep in north peak. Paddled over there and scored quite a few rippable rights and the odd ledging left. Just me and two other guys sharing the peak. Fun stuff.

6:00 am - 7:30 am
2 - 4'+ Another debate raged in my head as I was trying to figure out where to go. Looked at Bird Rock in the dark and it looked drained out and very inconsistent on the low tide so headed down to OB. Jetty looked pretty good at dawn with it bouncing and barreling down the line. This literally lasted for about 20 minutes as the crowd got to unmanageable proportions and the sandbar started closing out fast. South swell seemed to be peaking with some good three to five wave sets but nothing really holding it well at all. There were some gems to be had but your chances of getting them were slim to none with the rabid crowd. Poor.
Swami's 08/17/05
6:00 am - 7:30 am
1 - 3' Debated where I was going to surf because I knew Black's was out of the questions with the way its's been crowded lately so headed up to Swami's hoping that the 180 degree swell was going to sneak in. Unfortunately wasn't really happening but there were a few small sets on the corner and a very light crowd so it was OK.
Black's 08/16/05
6:00 am - 7:30 am
1 - 3'+ Tropical souths fading while a new long period swell from the south barely showing. No wind but the tide was swamping things down a bit. Tried getting something together at south peak but a lot of the waves closing out. Waited patiently for some sets deep at south peak and was finally rewarded with a couple of decent lefts. Crowd at near nuclear proportions. OK.
Black's 08/15/05
6:00 am - 7:30 am
2 - 3'+ More small south swell from the combined tropical storms. Swell had shifted much more west overnight. With the higher tide and direction it was a bit walled but some decent lefts were coming through if you were patient especially down toward south peak. OK.
Black's 08/14/05
6:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 3'+ A bit more swell off of Fernanda and TS Greg. Some clean peaky waves off of north peak again and a little bit towards middle peak. Surfed south of the pack toward middle peak by myself for about an hour and caught some fun little rights and lefts. By 7 the pack was on it however cluttering the lineup but I was still getting mine. Fun.
Black's 08/13/05
7:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 2' Very small south swell off of Hurricane Frenanda. Squeaky clean little peaks busting off of north peak and even further north. Rights mostly the call with some fast little lines. Wind started coming up and a fatter tide had it shutting down by 9. OK.
Black's 08/11/05
5:45 am - 7:00 am
1' Not getting light till almost 6 now which is putting a crimp in my surf time. Tiny pulse of southern hemi. Almost unridable. Red tide is back but the water seems to be back into the 70s. Caught two small decent lefts early but it completely shut down after that. Terrible.
Black's 08/04/05
5:30 am - 7:00 am
1 - 2' Lingering but very inconsistent south. Some decent waves off of south peak. Caught a bunch of little racey lefts and some sectiony rights out the gate but the tide was filling in and slowing things down a bit more. Some really good but inconsistent sets coming through deep in south peak every twenty minutes of so but couldn't nail one down. OK.
OB Jetty 08/03/05
5:30 am - 8:00 am
1 - 4' Swell pulsed up overnight and the tides have started to go negative early. Some good waves at dawn. Pretty racey but linking up on the low tide for some real speed burns. Swell has a lot of west in it so coming a little too straight on for the jetty. Tide really started to fill and completely shut it down and it took me about 45 minutes to get a good wave in. OK.
OB Jetty 08/02/05
5:30 am - 7:00 am
1' A new small south supposed to pulse. Really small and blown out. Barely ridable off the corner with the bounce totally shut down. Somehow caught a decent wave in. Pretty bad.
Black's 08/01/05
5:30 am - 7:00 am
1 - 3' Still some south running with a little bit of wind swell. Wind on it early but surfable still and actually kind of fun. Wind laid down as the tide continued to move out. Some rights off of middle peak were kind of fun.
