2 - 3'+ Rain finally let up and a stiff offshore was grooming some nice close outs over the bars of P.B. Not completely closed out but a few real fast corners kept things interesting. One of those deals where you had to be at the right place at the right time. Really no skill in wave reading whatsoever. NOt great but not horrible. |
| Swami's | 02/24/01 9:00 am - 11:00 am |
2 - 3'+ Wind swell lingering around and possibly some ground swell but it was hard to tell with the wind swell predominating. For being a sloppy swell the inside was awfully rippable. Doubling up way inside over kiddie bowl for some fun lines. Tried surfing the outside but wasn't getting the waves that were linking properly, so ended up inside wide pretty much all by myself while everyone fought outside. |
| Swami's | 02/21/01 6:00 am - 7:30 am |
3 - 4'+ Swell was on the way down in a big way but still some solid surf showing. Surfed wide almost at kiddie bowl because the crowd was clearly thick after about 6:30. Too much hype generated form the day before. Still caught some good solid waves that were swinging wide and lining up way inside. This was key or you would go mad trying to battle the longboard/semi-gun jokers outside dropping in at three apiece. |

4 - 5' and building Where is the swell? I'm looking at the buoys in the early predawn hours and it is small in San Diego County. Outside buoys are huge, so I decide to go. Luckily it really started coming on around 7:30 or so and I got a good solid hour of great surf. Swell had some bump to it but plenty of power and mid reef was lining up very nicely and even a few through kiddie bowl. Thankfully the early morning crowd was still light making for a pretty stoked vibe in the water. Caught a wave, paddled back out and caught another. Repeated process for an hour. Got more good waves in that hour than the whole month of February. Got out and watched for a few minutes from teh stairs. The outside was starting to come alive with one solid wave from the peak to kiddie bowl. Could tell it was going to be an all time day, but hey, what would you rather have? Good overhead surf and a light crowd or double overhead, windblown, and insanely crowded surf? |

2 - 3' + Same swell as the day before but seemed to be on the fade. Swell never really lived up to the hype. Small, clean waves over the inside reef with a tad of mushiness fom the high tide. Some good sets but as usual at Swami's there was a full pack of bozos chomping at the bit on the outside when it's small. Fun but nothing great. |
| Blacks | 02/18/01 8:00 am - 10:00 am |
2 - 4' Inconsistent but clean west swell hitting. Still not a real big fan of Blacks in the winter. Unless it is really big it has a tendency to be a fast closeout on the west and northerly directions. Anyhow, that was how it was, fast or closed out but clean, and if you could choose right, there were some real choice lefts to be had as the tide started dropping. Got an insane overhead one that reeled easily for a hundred yards and was completely wackable. A few more of those and I was satisfied after not having surfed for a week. |
| Swami's | 02/11/01 6:30 am - 7:30 am |
2 - 3' + Wind swell and an inconsistent groundswell mix with the groundswell dominating. Bigger and more consistent when I first got out. Some fun lines through the inside with the outside impossible as usual, especially when it is so inconsistent. Tide started filling in making for the inside corner a worthy option with kiddie bowl really not happening. Some fun ones, nothing great, and basically it was good to get wet. |
| Scripps | 02/08/01 6:30 am - 7:30 am |
3 - 4' Windswell and not a very good one either. Super frigid at dawn with ice everywhere and really cold and strong offshores. Waves were shifty mushy peaks with the odd good one mixed in if you were patient. Could only take about an hour of the torture. Caught a decent left in and struggled to get out of my suit. |
| Reed St. | 02/05/01 6:30 am - 7:30 am |
1 - 2' Was thinking there was going to be a bit more swell than there was. Looked everywhere yesterday being disappointed with dribbly and packed Swami's to close outs everywhere else I looked. Today was small and clean mushballs. Little roundhouses and weak lips. One other guy out. Highly uninspiring. |
| Newbreak | 02/03/01 9:00 am - 11:00 am |
3 - 4'+ New swell a bit inconsistent but coming on pretty strong. A lot of warble in this swell from a little southern hemi, making for less than stellar conditions but with hot temperatures and zero wind I think we'll all take it. Not real hollow but lining up in chunky sections getting better as the tide dropped. Some pretty smackable lips and big roundhouse sections. Crowd was a bit evil early on but the bad vibe merchants split early on leaving a pretty genial crowd willing to share. Was a little out of synch at first but got into a good groove the second half catching some real carvable sets and did a complete figure eight roundy which I haven't done forever. |
