2 - 5' Once again had to wait till the weekend to get the good stuff. Yesterday actually had some size but the Reefs around here were strangely small while the pier was booming. Anyhow, swell came up fast yesterday so I assumed that it would drop rapidly. Wasn't to far off the mark. Swell was windswelly and had dropped overnight when I arrived down at the cliffs. Lots of guys out everywhere with an overall evil vibe in the water. Outside primarily breaking with because of the swell strength, direction, and tide. Got some good waves however despite the dropin artists that were trying hard to ruin my session (don't surf here much anymore and therefore have lost my place in the lineup). Nabbed a nice tube on the inside when the tide started dropping out. With the dropping tide the inside started to come alive a bit more and enjoyed surfing way inside pretty much by myself for the rest of the session. |
| Swami's | 02/20/99 10:00 am - 12:00 pm |
3 - 4' Well after having to work through the majority of this swell (I'm working 9 - 5 again) I managed to make it up to Swami's to catch a re up in the swell after it took a downturn on Fri. Crowd was surprisingly light for a Saturday with the waves solidly coming across kiddy bowl and the main peak looking good but real crowded. Opted for kiddy bowl and was well rewarded with solid chest high peelers feeling the inside reef with the higher tide. Crowd started getting thick half way through the session with more main peak waves pushing through kiddy bowl making for less to go around. Good to catch some solid surf again. |

2' - 3' Small, clean, and setty swell with a super high tide this morning making for some waves that would hold up. Waves were breaking real fast however with some pretty hollow sections surprisingly. My first wave was a screaming left that threw over my head for a sec. Got a head high right set wave that swallowed me up. Other waves were lined up but sectiony. Pretty cold out there. |
| Parking Lot | 02/10/99 11:00 am - 12:00 pm |
2' - 4' Victory at sea conditions but me and Morgan were the only ones out. Hideous paddle with the strong north wind pushing us down the beach. Caught some fun ones that held up and then went in from the numbness. Sandbar has shifted again moving more south. |
| Parking Lot | 02/09/99 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm |
1' - 3' Super Clean. Calm before the storm. Inconsistent however and a little pack out at the Lot with some real nice glassy peelers pushing all the way through. Caught one of those waves were you can basically direct board with your mind. |
| Rincon | 02/07/99 10:00 am - 12:00 pm |
2' - 4' Went up to Ventura this weekend and decided to bring the board because it looked like there was going to be some swell hitting the coast over the weekend. Checked C-street Saturday morning and was very disappointed with weak 1'-3' slop at Fairgrounds so gave it a pass hoping that the next day would be the call. Get to C-street about 9:45 and see solid lines coming through but real mushy and crowded so decide if I'm going to surf a crowd might as well do it in style and surf Rincon. Jam up there and the parking lot is not even close to being full. Throw on the suit and paddle out at the top of the Cove and catch one all the way to the freeway. Not used to surfing such a beautiful wave. The only thing that comes close around here is Nubes but Nubes is much more defined because it is a reef. Rincon shifts and breaks in so many different places it can drive you crazy not being used to the lineup and some of the waves were a bit soft so selection was key. Figured out the lineup and caught the waves that were going wide so I didnt have to hassle to much with the crowd. Kim Mearig, an older female pro, was ripping and dominating the cove lineup. The only thing that got me down was a lot of guys calling people off than totally kooking beautiful sections. |
| Reed St. | 02/03/99 10:00 am - 12:00 pm |
1' - 3' Small, glassy and clean. The city is doing work on the sea wall along the board walk and they have piled up sand from the digging down to the foundation at the high tide line, which has created a sandbar in front of Thomas and Reed. Paddled out at Thomas first because there was a nice looking right coming through on the sets. Two other guys out with me. Really not enough to go around. Got a couple of good ones that were a little weak. Then a whole pack paddled out who thought they were team rippers. I quickly paddled down to Reed were there was a left that was breaking with no one around. Tide started backing off and nice rippable peak appeared right in front of Reed. Real smackable lefts. Got my fill and went in as the crowd started to thicken again because the glassy conditions were looking to hold all day. |
| Missouri St. | 02/01/99 9:00 am - 10:00 am |
2' - 4' Mixed up wind swell from the front that passed through yesterday. A few rights but for the most part washing machine conditions with major duck diving going on. Got a fat right in after freezing my ass off from the wind switching hard onshore and my deteriorating, holy wetsuit. |
