| Beacon's | 06/30/02 7:00 am - 9:00 am |
2 - 3'+ Checked Swami's and it was looking really lack luster to the point of almost being flat. Pretty much just small southern hemi in the water so headed up to Beacon's on a whim. Haven't surfed Beacon's in about 10 years I would say. There are three main spots there: the left at Leucadia Blvd, which I consider Beacon's proper that can fire at times, especially on a good New Zealand swell, the right in front of the reeds, which is a bit more fickle depending on sand build up, and Phoebe further north, which is a mechanical right hander that is fickle also, but when on is incredibly fun. I think Beacons is the only beach that held the infamous sand restoration debacle of last summer. There is actually a beach there where before there was none. The cliffs here are soft sandstone and erode like crazy. I'm glad to see that the wonderful home owners have thrown up more ugly sea walls and have concreted huge areas of the cliffs. Idiots. Anyhow, super clean little peaks up and down the beach mainly focusing on the right in front of the reeds at first and then shifting a bit further south towards the left. Real fast lined up sections for a few whiz bangs and floaters. Pulled a huge backside floater across the inside on a set left. Pretty fun. |
| Swami's | 06/29/02 7:30 am - 9:30 am |
2 - 3'+ Wind swell and a strengthening southern hemi creating some nice warbly waves that were rippable on the low tide. A small crew of us on the inside. Really whackable at first and then the tide shifted and shut it down again just like the day before. |
| Swami's | 06/28/02 6:30 am - 8:00 am |
1 - 3' Wind swell with just a tad of southern hemi. Some small, inconsistent, little rippable waves on the inside that I had all to myself. Tide shifted and turned in and shut it down almost immediately. Fun while it lasted. |
| Reed St. | 06/27/02 9:30 am - 11:00 am |
1 - 2' Almost a desperation surf but I saw a few pocks in the wind swell misery out there for my taking. Not a soul around and the water was warm so what the hell? A few crumbly lefts and a few rights actually lining up for a couple whacks. Better than nothing. |
| Diamond St | 06/23/02 10:30 am - 12:00 pm |
2 - 3' New little north swell running with a bit of wind swell still in the mix. Tide had just turned from high and some fun rights were to be had off of the flag for a few whacks and floaters. Wasn't expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. Tide moved out and pretty much killed the form. |
| La Jolla Shores | 06/23/02 7:00 am - 9:00 am |
2 - 3'+ Wind swell still running with some longer intervals. Shores a bit soft but at least it was lining up. Some good lefts off the middle of the parking lot that were rippable and the few odd rights holding up near green wall. Decided to stick to the left which definitely had a better bar for some actual carving. OK but nothing great. |
| Black's | 06/22/02 10:00 am - 12:00 pm |
2 - 3' Really junky wind swell the only thing running. Scripps looked good but no where within miles of it to park so went to Black's. Real bouncy and crumbly. Pretty terrible with zero form. Managed to catch a few lefts that had a bit of face but overall it was trash. |
| Newbreak | 06/20/02 11:00 am - 1:00 pm |
2 - 3' Lots of west wind swell in the water. Looked all over the place finally deciding that the cliffs might have something on a the medium tide. Hardly any body around. Two heads out at Nubes so we decide to hit it. Was a father and son who had already had there fill so they went in and me and my brother had it to ourselves for about an hour and a half. Small but some fun, consistent, and extremely rippable waves pushing through. Not bad. |
| Alisitos (K-58) | 06/18/02 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm |
2 - 4' Headed back up when the south really petered out. More wind swell and still a few south bumps. Knew the beach breaks north of Ensenada would be good. Blazing hot day and sheet glassy. Water was crystal clear. Nice left wedges breaking in front of the hotel and a few rights. Nice and smackable. A good way to end the trip. |
| Quatro Casas | 06/17/02 All day |
2 - 4' A bit of drop in the swell but still real fun. Double sessioned it again around the high tide. A bit more crowded today but still plenty of fun rippable waves through the point. Lots of round houses and a few tight little tubes on the evening session. |
| Quatro Casas | 06/16/02 All day |
2 - 5' Woke up in Bahia Almejas and noticed the swell was straight out of the south with no mix and some big sets that started to hit the beach break the night before. Got out of there immediately and headed to Quatro. We hit it just right. Quatro loves a higher tide and we pulled in just as it was filling in and people were leaving after the weekend. Sun came out and glassed it off. Nice long rights through the point. Not all time but rippable on the inside. Caught it again after the tide turned around in the evening and was sheet glassy with no one else out for a couple of hours. |
| Bahia Almejas | 06/15/02 10:00 am - 12:00 pm |
2 - 4' After getting skunked in Punta San Jose with hell offshore winds, dust, and no surf we decided to travel on down to the beach breaks around Punta Cabras. Ended up in the north end of Bahia Almejas beach breaks where there are some nice dunes and good camping. Fickle beach break out front that is really tide sensitive and needs a crossed up swell. Luckily when we pulled up after the hell road from San Jose it had a bit of a cross swell running. Water was but ass cold. A few wedgy lefts and flat faced rights amid a lot of close outs. Fun but not all that great. Definitely expecting more. Later that day we checked K181 in Ejido Erendira but no luck so really it turned out to be a nice long beer run. |
| Black's | 06/13/02 7:00 am - 9:00 am |
2 - 4' Warm up surf for the trip. My brother, who is from Cambria, reveled in the warmness of the 66º water. Swell really mixed up with south ground swell mixing with some north west wind swell. A few lefts cornering fast and a lot of close outs. Managed to crack my rail in the shallows of north peak somehow on a close out dumper. |
| Black's | 06/11/02 7:00 am - 9:00 am |
2 - 3'+ Finally a reprieve from the wind. Black's was silky smooth this morning and very clean. A small southern pulse running inconsistently. Not enough swell to draw a crowd but enough juice to make it worthy. Some really tasty lefts. It was a bash fest this morning with the lefts opening up beautifully for full on back side snaps and carves. Light crowd, no hassles, so real fun. |
| La Jolla Shores | 06/10/02 7:30 am - 9:00 am |
2 - 3' South wind has been atrocious since yesterday morning. Only place in south county that can handle it is the Shores and Scripps. The wind blows side to offshore on these stiff eddy south winds. Very fast wind swell waves. Mostly just right corners at first closing out but with the tide rising a few more lefts happening off the middle of the parking lot for a few really nice lined up waves. Nothing great but not terrible. |
| Swami's | 06/08/02 7:00 am - 9:00 am |
1 - 3' A lot cleaner this morning. Nice little clean lines out of the west with a few sets from the south. Wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised by the zippiness of the inside. Some fun little whackable waves until the south wind came up and blew it out. |
| Swami's | 06/07/02 6:30 am - 7:30 am |
1 - 3' Was kind of hoping for a repeat of yesterday but alas, it was not to happen. South wind came up the minute I hit the water. What would have been fun little zippy waves were kind of crumbly. Didn't help that the swell had faded a bit. There were a few bigger southern hemi sets lining up for a few whacks but most waves were small and crumbly. Got a good set after an hour and went in on a good note. |
| Swami's | 06/06/02 7:00 am - 8:30 am |
2 - 3'+ Oily glassy this morning again. Kind of small and crossed but the southern hemi pulse definitely working on the way inside. Lots of guys taking a pass. Had the very inside corner all to myself and there were some really fun zippy waves coming through for lots of whacks and floaters. Tide shifted and kind of turned it off so went in. Good session. |
| Missouri St | 06/05/02 7:00 am - 8:30 am |
2 - 4' Combo of new southern hemi and straight west wind swell making for some punchy conditions. Really just corners popping up here and there for some really fast waves. Some good rights were lining up at first and as the tide dropped the lefts started working a bit more. Lots of close outs but if you got a corner it was well worth it. |
| Missouri St | 06/04/02 8:00 am - 9:00 am |
1 - 3' Oily glassy this morning but the swell had really dropped over night. Combo of a little southern pulse with some left over wind swell. Some fun small rights and some lippier lefts, especially after the tide had dropped. No crowd. Fun but nothing great. |
| Swami's | 06/03/02 6:30 am - 9:00 am |
2 - 4' Conditions really changed yesterday as the south west and hurricane swell dropped off and a wind swell filled in late yesterday. Pretty consistent this morning but lacking punch. Better when I first got out with a fuller tide and cleaner conditions, although the south wind was on it at dawn. Pretty mushy overall but there were a few putting up the lip for the odd whack. Conditions continued to deteriorate as the south wind started tearing up the line up. Finally managed to get one in that wasn't a complete mushball so was happy. Better than flatness. |
| Swami's | 06/01/02 6:00 am - 8:00 am |
2 - 4'+ Mostly south west and hurricane swell in the water this morning. West swell dramatically dropped overnight. Still some juice just not as consistent as yesterday. Still real clean and pretty fun. Kind of sectiony because of the multiple directions but the inside was lining up pretty well. The peak was looking good and connecting to the inside on a few but it was just jammed up. Three heads at a time dropping in. Mostly surfed the inside swing sets but also ventured out to the peak for awhile and sat a little inside of everyone for the rare deep one. Lots of round houses. |
