Location Date/Time Conditions
OB Jetty 06/27/04
5:30 am - 8:30 am
2 - 3' some + South swell filled in to go along with a north west wind swell boost. Waves were soft but lining up with some decent face to carve up. Winds light and shifty with it actually glassing off for awhile. Seemed to be better on the push as when the tide started pulling out it started to get much more weak. Fun but nothing epic.

6:00 am - 8:30 am
1 - 2' some 3' New south swell slowly filling in. Pretty tiny but a few sets were cracking across the bar and lining up all the way through. Caught a window for about an hour were it was actually somewhat consistent and shared it with one girl. Tide started sucking out, the crowd materialized and it completely shut down. I ended up walking in. Ok to weak.
OB Jetty 06/24/04
6:00 am - 8:30 am
1 - 3'+ Tiny south swell holding on. Very inconsistent but when they would come through they were pretty good. Tide was dropping to almost 0 at 9:00 so pretty drained but there seems to be a new build up of sand on the outside. Was pretty windy out of the north but it glassed off eventually. Some real nice wedges bouncing off the jetty good for a couple whacks and some tubes - you just had to be patient. Pretty fun.

6:30 am - 8:30 am
1 - 2' Easily the most over hyped swell of the year. Everybody had this one pegged wrong. When the buoys didn't go over 1' at 16 seconds I knew it was a bust. Anyhow, it was showing 1.2' at 14 seconds at 185° and just super frickin' weak. The only saving grace was low tide, maybe. Looked all over and it was small everywhere. Maybe Trestles was good. Surfed the corner which had some super clean zippy little waves ever 10-15 minutes. Tons of idiots out anyhow. Caught maybe 3 good waves the whole time. Weak.
Black's 06/18/04
7:00 am - 9:00 am
2 - 4' Southern hemi still hanging around but super inconsistent. Some good sets but the sand bars are not in very good shape making for very fast waves verging on complete close outs. Light south wind wasn't helping either putting a pretty bad crumble and bump on it. Managed to catch a few decent lefts but nothing spectacular. OK.
Swami's 06/17/04
5:30 am - 8:30 am
2 - 3'+ Lingering west wind swell joined by an inconsistent but very clean southwest swell. A bit soft off the peak but once the tide started pushing some inconsistent but very rippable waves off the corner. Caught a couple of smokers that were super fun with one throwing a solid tube on the inside fingers. Fun.

5:00 am - 7:30 am
1 - 3'+ More west wind swell around 10 to 12 second intervals. Some nice sets of the peak on the low tide. A bit soft but some face to work with. Tide was filling in and starting to shut it down but I managed to get a freak corner set in. OK.
Northside Scripp's 06/14/04
6:00 am - 8:00 am
1 - 3' Wind swell much smaller but still hanging in there. Was hoping for a repeat performance. Alas, it was to be. A few short close out lefts with the odd one connecting up but there was a few bowly rights to be had. OK.
North side Scripp's 06/13/04
6:00 am - 8:00 am
2 - 3'+ Wind swell finally on a down trend but still enough in the water for the mother of all wind swell magnets - Scripps. South side not looking so hot with either dribblers or close outs but spied north side looking OK. Drove up to the north side lookout and saw some roping lefts off the pier and further up the beach. Some fun zingy left bowls good for a couple of backside snaps and floaters. Light crowd and lots of waves to go around. Real fun.
Black's 06/12/04
11:00 am - 2:00 pm
4 - 5'+ Wind swell persisting from a strong high off of northern California. Had a garage sale in the morning so had to do an afternoon session. Wind on it when I got down but not completely blown out but still pretty crumbly. Super consistent and dumpy. Lots of work paddling out. Perseverence was needed to score the odd roping corner. Was completely out of sync the first hour catching just one decent wave. Conditions improved as the tide bottomed out and turned with south peak throwing some ugly big lefts. Board snapping goodness as I saw one guy cleave his board in two. OK.

5:30 am - 9:00 am
2 - 4'+ String of wind swell continues but with the added plus of some southern hemi energy giving it a more solid and lined up feel. Pretty rippable with sheet glass conditions. Lots of good lines through the corner for some big cutties and some good roundies. Fun.
Swami's 06/10/04
5:00 am - 8:30 am
2 - 4'+ Lots of wind swell today and the conditions cooperating nicely with a light offshore to a slack wind. Not a lot of power but some size. If you picked the right one you were rewarded well with a good carvable wall. Crowd manageable until about eight when a whole pack sat on me on the corner. OK.
Swami's 06/09/04
5:30 am - 8:30 am
2 - 3'+ More wind swell with slightly cleaner conditions at dawn. Surfed the corner again and was finding a few round housable waves here and there and a few lining up for a quick lip. Around 7:00 the wind started to switch to the south as the tide dropped. Was getting a bit bigger but the wind was really starting to thrash it. For some reason I kept on paddling back out for more after getting what should have been the wave in. OK turning to very poor.
Swami's 06/08/04
5:00 am - 6:30 am
1 - 3' Wind swell had pulsed up a bit but south winds still a major factor. Still even with the wind on it at dawn a few fun corners to be had through the inside that were good for a few cracks. OK.
Swami's 06/06/04
7:00 am - 9:30 am
1 - 3' Just trickling southern hemi left overs and some new wind swell out of the north. Not consistent or powerful but really not too many guys out. Basically had the corner to myself after 8:00. A few rippables to be had but nothing great. OK.
Newbreak 06/05/04
6:00 am - 8:30 am
2 - 3' some + Morning low a hideous -2.0. Everywhere drained so went to the cliffs were at least it likes a low tide. A few guys out at Nubes. Some clean and rippable little waves from the holding southern hemi. A bit inconsistent but crowd was light. Had to choose wisely because if the wave wasn't big enough they weren't clearing the inside reef. Managed to shove myself into a few little bowls. After about an hour past peak low it really shut down. Fun.
South Bird Rock 06/04/04
7:00 am - 10:00 am
2 - 4' some 5'+ Same exact scenario as the day before. Low tide coming high with light to no wind and sheet glassy conditions. Unfortunately the waves had decided to become very inconsistent and a ton of kooks were out that had no business surfing a reef like this. Swell must have turned a more southerly direction because the sets were packing a punch but they were about 15 minutes appart. Still managed to get some good ones but it was a battle with the crowd. Guys finally went in and the last half hour was mellow but by that time I was cooked. Fun but nothing like yesterday.
South Bird Rock 06/03/04
7:00 am - 10:00 am
3 - 5' some 6'+ Tides starting to get a wee bit too low in the mornings. Fortunately high was going to be around 10:00 so there would at least be a flood push. A little junky on the low but after about 15 minutes out the tide really started pushing in and smoothing the waves. Kind of inconsistent but the swell was definitely pulsing with some very solid sets. Waves mostly drop and round house until the tide filled in enough for the Ziggy's connection. Because of the continuing work on the sewer lines in La Jolla, access to the stairs at the bottom of Bird Rock Ave. is restricted. You have two choices to get out then. One, climb the old drainage ditch at the bottom of Chelsea Ct. Not a fun option. Two, paddle from Hanneman's, which in reality isn't that bad. So all this hassle to get out created a very mellow crowd of about 6, so plenty to go around. As the tide filled in further the wind slacked to sheet glass and the sun came out and the waves started to pump. Inside A-framing and peeling into Ziggy's or swinging a bit deep and then throwing some sketchy bowls over the boils. Locked into one of these that really got the adrenalin going. Just was getting better but by 10:00 I was drained and caught one at Sewer Line to go in. Really good.
Scripp's 06/02/04
6:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 2' some 3' Another dose of wind swell but this one inconsistent and in the 8-10 second range. Seemed like the pier was trying to do it again but in reality it was just mush. Wandered around the whole line up from the stairs to the pier looking for something vaguely resembling a surfable wave. Headed back to the pier and noticed north side had a little left. Just me and one other guy, who didn't know what the hell he was doing, had this little zippy left off the pier all to ourselves. Inconsistent but the south wind laid down and sheet glass for about an hour as the tide push really helped things out. Some super fun little lefts. Wind came up quickly and trashed it. Fun while it lasted.
