| Swami's | 03/31/01 6:00 am - 7:30 am |
3 - 6' Real clean, inconsistent, and solid south swell peaking. Swell coming in around at 180 degrees, so really not the best direction for anywhere in San Diego except maybe Trestles. Still, some fun corners lining up for some good long waves if you picked the ones that weren't sweeping into the channel. |
| OB Jetty | 03/30/01 6:00 am - 7:30 am |
2 - 3' A lot smaller and cleaner than the day before but pretty limp with just a real steep southern hemi showing a few really fast waves across the sandbar next to the Jetty, but a large crowd and inconsistent conditions making it frustrating. Caught a couple good ones but nothing like the day before. |
| OB Jetty | 03/29/01 6:30 am - 7:30 am |
3 - 4' Wind swell and a new southern hemi mixing it up creating bounce peaks off the jetty. Some really good lined up walls. Not a lot of bowls but just real smackable waves. Real fun with a small, stoked crowd. Water was a bit funky. Checked the report and it said the water was clean, but I'm not so sure seeing there was a million gallon sewage spill in Mission Bay a few days before. |
| Swami's | 03/28/01 6:00 am - 7:30 am |
2 - 4' Wind swell mixed with an inconsistent southern hemi. Low tide creating scattered peaks and some odd bowls. Tried surfing the outside but it was just impossible with the take off zone extremely tight. Ended up surfing the kiddy bowl with few guys which, once the tide turned around, had some nice waves coming through on the south sets that would freight train up. Managed to drop into one and get shacked the whole way through. My best tube of the whole winter season easily. |
| Parking Lot | 03/26/01 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm |
3 - 5' Pretty solid west swell mixed with windswell. Needed less tide but there were some pretty fat walls rolling through the Lot if you picked carefully. Pretty fun smackable waves with a light crowd from the brutal current sweeping people down the beach. |
| Swami's | 03/20/01 6:00 am - 7:30 am |
1 - 3' Small warbly and weak. Anticipated swell never really materialized. A few very inconsistent chest high sets peeling through but even those were weird and sectiony. Managed to get one or two that were half way decent but for the most part it was mush. Traffic was bad coming home, adding insult to injury. Can't win 'em all. |
| Santa Clara River | 03/18/01 11:30 am - 1:30 pm |
3 - 5' Small but super clean ground swell running with glassy condidions holding. Fairgrounds was real clean but only 1-2' feet. The night before I went out with some friends who said that the river mouth had been firing, so decided to check it out. Park at the Harbor and can see beautiful head high peaks lining up across the bar. Suit up and do the 10 minute walk and am rewarded with insane right hand point like river mouth. Breaking way outside with the bar firmly established. A bit shifty and seeing it was my first time there, I was a little out of synch but once I figured out the lineup I caught some really good waves. The place kind of breaks like uppers but much more hollow and is all time when its on and it was on. |
| Fairgrounds | 03/17/01 7:00 am - 9:00 am |
2 - 3' Left over wind swell creating just marginal conditions. Drove up to Rincon thinking that it would be smaller but cleaner. Instead it was flat as a pancake. Surf a bit gutless and shifty but if you picked the right one they were lining all the way up the Fairgrounds point. Caught a few of these that were little ripple waves. Water was a nice brownish green from a huge sewer spill the week before in the Ventura river. |
| Swami's | 03/14/01 6:00 am - 7:00 am |
2 - 3' Spring is definitely almost here. The north swells are packing less punch and a south east wind threatening to go south. Coupled with a thick overcast, the weather had a real spring like feel. Waves were small and mixed up wind swell with a touch of a lingering and steep north west ground swell. Pretty weak overall with a few quick bowl sections flattening out to nothingness. |
| Abbs | 03/13/01 6:00 am - 7:30 am |
3 - 4' some +An inconsistent and very north swell in the water today. Was going to go out at Nubes but there were already fifteen or so guys on it at dawn - great. Abbs looked bigger and less crowded, so opted for that. Some fun lined up freight train lefts with a few mush balls thrown in here and there because of the swell angle. Caught a nice set that swung wide into the channel and then caught a finely lined up one in. Looked like a slight shift in tide was going to kill it when I decided to go in. |
| Swami's | 03/11/01 11:30 am - 1:30 pm |
1 - 3' some + Small wind swell with so so conditions. It was really torn apart the day before from hideous south winds. Was hoping for a bit more wind swell but got stuck instead surfing small junk. There were a few good ones to be had if you choose right off the peak. First time I sat way outside and was rewarded for my patience with a good one in. |
| P.B. Point | 03/09/01 6:30 am - 7:30 am |
2 - 4' Real steep north west swell running, so decided to stick south were it had a better chance of hitting. After looking at the Point at dawn and then checking the beach breaks, decided to go out at the Point with the tide rising rapidly and a slight south wind picking up. A little mushy at first but once the tide started to fill in the inside corner of the point was lining up good. The swell was a little junky but the direction was pretty good allowing for some long and fast waves. Crowd small and real mellow. A real nice change to the frantic pace at Swami's. |
| Swami's | 03/08/01 6:00 am - 7:30 am |
2 - 3' Small and steep north west swell filling in. Hide tide killing what little amount of swell was creeping into the area. Real mushy and really not enough power to push well over the inside. There were a few good ones, but they were far and few between. I think I managed to get one decent one from the outside that lined up well. |
| Swami's | 03/05/01 7:30 am - 9:30 am |
3 - 5' + A surprise boost in swell overnight from the storm off the coast. Very short period and inconsistent but some very fast moving wedges. Pretty hard to figure out. Either real mushy or freight training. Caught a couple head high beauties toward the end of the session that made it all worth while. |
| Swami's | 03/03/01 7:30 am - 9:30 am |
2 - 3' + Much more crossed up today than the day before leaving less than ideal conditions. Really crowded too. Looked at it for about a half hour before paddling out, which was actually good because the crowd thinned out a bit. Very inconsistent south swell really the only thing ridable. Surfed the inside corner with a few guys and caught quite a few small sectiony waves that were swinging really wide onto the fingers of kiddie bowl and weren't even interesting the longboarders much. Fun but not great. |
| Swami's | 03/02/01 6:30 am - 7:30 am |
2 - 4' Some clean west swell mixed a bit with some southern hemi. Nice low tide making for some fun corners off the kiddie bowl. Not enough to go around on the peak so stuck on teh inside the whole time basically by myself. Fun little zippy waves that were a bit sectiony but rippable. |
