Location Date/Time Conditions
Swami's 05/31/04
6:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 2' some 3' Wind swell pretty much out the door but a few crackables on the upcoming tide off the corner. Conditions nice and glassy but unfortunately this wasn't going to help out the rapidly diminishing swell or the pack of jack asses that surf this place when it is under 3 feet. A few good roundies and the odd lip but struggled for at least a half an hour to get a good one in. Poor.
Scripp's 05/29/04
7:00 am - 10:00 am
2 - 4' New batch of wind swell at about 4-6 second intervals. A little weak at first on the morning high, but as the tide drew out and the swell really started to pulse, the pier at Scripp's really came alive with a pretty wedgy right and the odd left. Pretty windy out of the south but not completely blown out. The bars good enough to hold it up. Caught quite a few good rights that were lining up for a few cracks and then some good race tracks for the close out float. Pretty fun stuff even with a thick crowd.
Windansea 05/28/04
7:00 am - 10:00 am
2 - 4' some + New south swell on the rise. Pretty windy everywhere but for some reason Windan nice and glassy. My once a year session here. I must of saw some of the better sets of the morning while I was checking it. Once out, I found it to be super inconsistent, a tad weak, and a little warbly, but it was dishing up some nice chest to head high sets that were pretty carvable about every ten minutes or so. Nice to actually surf some real waves again. Seemed to get more inconsistent as the tide was moving out, but was still managing to scrap some together as the crowd started to become thick. Actually scored a little cover up on the inside. Fun but nothing great.
Scripp's 05/27/04
6:30 am - 9:00 am
1' some 2' Desperation is starting to set in so headed down to the only place I know that can be ridable on 2 foot wind swell. Very small but surfable. Bitty little peaks on the low tide favoring the lefts that actually had a bit of face to hit every blue moon. Wind light and variable and finally glassing off. Tide kept sucking out and the surf pretty much disappeared. Very poor.
Swami's 05/22/04
5:30 am - 9:00 am
1 - 3' Left over south swell with the persistent short period north west wind swell slop. Much cleaner conditions today but of course, less swell to go along with it. Nobody surfing the corner so headed out there for what seemed to be a pretty surfable wave. A bit soft but definitely lining up in places for quick little snaps. Wind was out of the south west lightly and then finally died. For the first time in a week I saw glassy conditions. Stayed out for a long time to get the wave count up in the inconsistent surf. Nothing pretty but at least it was surfable.
Newbreak 05/20/04
6:30 am - 9:00 am
2 - 3' some 4' Low tide and no wind but still not helping the shape out. Heavy south winds yesterday and consistent short period northwest wind swell junking up what would of otherwise have been a pretty nice medium sized southern hemi. Pretty weak and jumbled but a few sections pulling together for a few lips. If it was clean the south swell lines would have been pretty zappable but with the south wind and the wind swell on top it was super sectiony. Caught a few good ones and only one other person out, so in my book that is always a plus. South wind came up and completely trashed it. OK.
Swami's 05/19/04
6:30 am - 9:00 am
1 - 3' Low tide going high and quite a bit of sloppy short period wind swell in the water with some new southern hemi, which was showing very inconsistently. Pretty soft and jumbled but a few round housable waves off the corner until the south wind started to blow it to bits. Nice that the water is warm. Poor.
Stables/Fairgrounds 05/17/04
6:30 am - 8:00 am
1 - 2' Sat in traffic on the way down to Ventura all the way through Santa Barbara and Carpinteria. Beautiful sunny and glassy conditions. Looked like Tar Pits had some fun waves and Rincon had some mushy 2-3 footers. Was hopeful for the morning low. Not to happen. What little swell there was evaporated overnight leaving 1-2' wind swell slop with what seemed to be a micro tad of southern hemi. Caught two little zippy waves before the eddy wind came and thrashed it to hell. Terrible.
Rosa's 05/16/04
7:30 am - 9:30 am
1 - 3' Finally surfed this patch of sand in view of my brother's pad. Biggest it had been in 5 days and that'that's's not saying much. A few junky right peaks on the building tide but the wind came up and the tide got too high about a half hour into the session and the rest of the time I spent trying to get one in. Poor.
Sand Dollar 05/14/04
8:30 am - 10:00 am
1 - 3' After staring at Rosa's in Cambria for a few days, the hell winds finally backed off and it somewhat glassed off a bit and the ocean wasn't too puked out. I thought about it for a few minutes and then just hopped in the car for Big Sur. Sand Dollar is only about 40 minutes from Cambria so an easy drive with no one on the 1 in the morning. Turned out to be a beautiful day. Sand Dollar is a large cove that picks up anything and has bars up and down the cove. Tide was high and swell small, so breaking in front of the stairs in the southern portion of the cove. Incredibly powerful for the diminutive size of the waves. Some fun left and right peaks good for a few lips, carves and big close out bashes. Tide turned and really started moving out and screwed it up. Fun while it lasted.
Molera Pt. 05/11/04
2:30 pm - 5:00 pm
1 - 3' Swell pretty much over. With the north westerlies blowing for three days non stop nowhere else to surf so we hit it by ourselves. Clean little lines but tide sucking out super fast. Tides seem to move incredibly fast in this bay pretty much making tide books unreliable. I caught a few good ones early on but it completely shut down and I literally hopped off my board and walked a few feet in. Very so, so.
Molera Pt. 05/10/04
11:30 am - 1:30 pm
1 - 3' some + Swell peaked over night and tides not quite cooperating as it sucked out the minute we thought it was turning around. The beauty of the Big Sur - it's sheer unpredictability. Wind of course howling offshore. Ranger said it is ALWAYS windy here but yesterday was a doozy. Some sets still rolling through but not really big enough to do the full wrap into the bay. It was hitting the outside point and dissipating. There were some swinging wide and offering up the full on race track. A couple of long boarding goons trying their best to blow the best set waves but luckily just enough to go around. Water even colder today if you can believe that. OK.
Molera Pt. 05/09/04
2:30 pm - 5:00 pm
2 - 4' some + Arrived at Andrew Molera State Park around 1:00 pm and we're greeted by howling north westerlies. Luckily Molera takes these winds and hurles them straight offshore into the point sculpting any crap that does the 180º wrap into the bay and creates a wave of feathering beauty. Well that is if there is swell. Luckily a medium sized southern hemi was peaking as we arrived and we must of hit the perfect tide window because it was throwing some beautiful race tracks with the odd tube through the shallow point. Rippable once you got used to the wind trying to lift your board out of the wave. Water in the mind blowing high forties-low fifties. Brr. Pretty much me and my brother almost the whole session as a large crew went in when we were about to paddle out. Tide was filling in a bit too much an and literally the offshores became too strong to surf. Super fun while it lasted.
Black's 05/07/04
6:30 am - 8:30 am
1 - 3' some + South swell left overs and some wind swell scrapple. A few off south peak but overall pretty weak. Wind swell kind of playing havoc on the low tide as the bars struggled to put some clean lefts together. Did manage to get a few good back side roundies and a few lips but overall not so hot.
OB Jetty 05/06/04
7:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 3' some + South swell pulsing a bit mixed with a tad of wind swell. Tide low going high. Pretty dumpy when I first paddled out. Tide started filling in and a few waves doing the bounce off the jetty. Low crowd due to the swirling winds and inconsistency but some super fast ones lining up and occassionally opening up for a few rips. Bowls were a bit tight to get in to. Was getting better with more water but the swell was definitely on the down trend as it became more and more inconsistent and the eddy winds started to blow it out. Fun while it lasted.
Swami's 05/04/04
5:00 am - 6:30 am
1 - 2' some + What a difference a day makes. Swell way down and scrappy. A few takers but not much going on. Managed to pull together a few south swell scraps on the inside. Poor.
Swami's 05/03/04
6:00 am - 9:00 am
2 - 4' some + South swell hanging in there along with a new west swell. A bit inconsistent but as the tide started pushing it got pretty damn fun. Super hot and glassy conditions. The corner awfully rippable and some really good waves breaking off the peak and connecting all the way through. Good luck getting one of those hotly contested bad boys. Stuck on the corner at moments of almost solitude as every body scrapped it out outside. Well worth a wave that is a foot smaller but much more rippable. Tide peaked and then turned and it shut down. Super fun.
Swami's 05/02/04
7:00 am - 9:00 am
1 - 3' some + New south swell of 180 degrees. For some reason Swami's like this direction while it really doesn't like 200 - 230 degrees. I'm slowly finding this out over the years. Some fun little rippable waves on the high tide push. Super glassy and hot but the crowd kind of getting on the nerves. Was able to fill up by the time the tide turned and it shut down. Fun.
Black's 05/01/04
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
2 - 3' some + South swell pretty much on the major fade with 12 second intervals left and inconsistent at that. Just a puff of north wind but conditions really not that clean maybe from onshores in the water outside. Tide pretty much too low for the small scrapple on offer. A few really nice lefts through south peak and the odd right. Super packed and if you didn't speak Portuguese forget it(the Brazilians have truly taken over this spot). Didn't catch jack shit for about an hour until the crowd mellowed out a bit. Then managed to pull down a few round housable lefts and some pretty racy rights. OK.
